Service Alert: Phishing Attempt on Campus

SERVICE(S) AFFECTED:
Email

TIME OF OCCURRENCE:
Wednesday December 12, 2018 (3:00 pm)

AFFECTED USERS:
various users on campus

ESTIMATED RECOVERY:
unknown

MORE INFO:
There have been reports of phishing emails being sent to Acadia emails. The emails appear to be from Acadia, with the tittle acadiau.ca Failure Delivery Notification. The fraudulent emails are asking users to review messages that have been placed in quarantine.

Technology Services would like to take the opportunity to remind you about the importance of vigilance when it comes to email.  Simple phishing emails such as these can lead to stolen identities and financial loss.  With busy schedules, it is a time for heightened awareness as identifying phishing emails may be more difficult on mobile devices.

When deciding whether the email is fraudulent, ask some of the following questions:

  • Is the email sent from someone inside the organization, a customer or a vendor, but is unusual or out of character?
  • Is the email from somebody within the organization and someone you recognize but using a suspicious domain (i.e. Microsoft-support.com) or Outlook, Hotmail, or other type of email address instead of @acadiau.ca?
  • Is the email unexpected and from someone with whom you don’t communicate regularly?
  • Does the email contain suspicious links?

Please notify the Service Desk using the Phish-Alert functionality, as soon as you receive a phishing email.  This quick reporting will enable TS staff to analyze the message, its severity and breadth across campus. For further information on the Phish Alert functionality, see the following HUB article: https://hub.acadiau.ca/TDClient/KB/ArticleDet?ID=652
